Matthijs Röling werd geboren in het Zeeuwse Oostkapelle maar groeide op in de stad Groningen. Op jonge leeftijd studeerde hij tijdens de roerige jaren zestig aan de Koninklijke Academie in Den Haag, om vervolgens aan de Rijksakademie in Amsterdam te studeren. Ook toen toonde de jonge kunstenaar veel interesse in de poëtische rust van het noorden.
